Isabel Shaw received a BFA from Bard College then attended The School of Visual Arts and, while working as a graphic designer, Cooper Union nights. Her interest in sculpture intensified after leaving the advertising agency in 1962.  She broadened her studies of sculptural techniques in individual workshops and classes at SUNY Purchase and Silvermine Guild of Artists and her own research.   In 1972 she built a studio in the lower level of her home and has worked there ever since.

Because of her early training and experience as a dancer gesture and thrust of the human body is paramount in her work.  Her sculptures are stylizations caught in mid motion. The degree of abstraction depends on the period when the sculpture was done.

She has been represented in galleries in New York City, Denver, CO and in London, England and has appeared in many others across the United States.  Her works are included in private collections in the United Stated, Europe and Asia.

Artist Statement

I conceive with my hands and body and refine with my mind.   In the classic mediums of wood, stone and bronze I endeavor to created movement.

I believe my most successful sculptures are those in which I have succeeded in refining the human figure down to just the elements of the motion without loosing their voluptuousness.
