Francine Perlman has been exhibiting works on paper, sculpture, constructions and installations since 1985. She has had numerous solo shows at Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, New York City, beginning in 1995; most recently in 2012, “Where Lines Can Go”, which included both sculpture and works on paper.  At the Fine Arts Gallery at Westchester Community College, she was granted that venue’s first ever solo exhibition. She had a solo show at the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue and other non-gallery settings, including Alternet, a traveling collaboration of 100 artists.  Her work has appeared in many group exhibitions in the US, including the Hammond Museum, Ceres Gallery, City College Archive Gallery, Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, the National Jewish Museum, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, and the Albright Knox Museum. She was awarded a residency at the Saltonstall Foundation.  Her work appeared in the 2004 Bonn Biennial, Germany, in two shows simultaneously at the Frauen Museum.  She has an MFA from City College.

Artist Statement

In this series, the drawings start with freely drawn circles, lines, and infinities, which, after the application of many layers, suggest the emergent structure and developing pockets of deep space.   These drawings contain themes that occur in much of my work, both in two dimensions and three – line as the fundamental supporting element of design and construction, and emerging or defined space as the narrative.   Text is often part of the drawings, both as a linear element and as a contributor to the narrative, but only as a foundation, always blended into the surrounding structure and wholly illegible.
